DIVERSEcity Skills Training Centre

Offering online and in-person courses to get you ready for the workforce!

DIVERSEcity Skills Training Centre offers specialized training courses to help Canadian and immigrant jobseekers enter the workforce with in-demand skills and confidence. These fee-based courses that focus on job-ready skills such as computer and customer service skills are one to five days in length and are taught by industry experts.

Course Descriptions

Basic Computer Skills (Introduction to Computer Skills)

Upon completing this 4-day training, participants will get a basic understanding of parts and functions of computers, learn the basic functions of Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, and learn more about the Internet and email.

Essential Computer Skills for the Workplace

Upon completing this 5-day or 8-day training, participants will learn general office administration using computer applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook), generating and editing:

  • Marketing materials such as posters and flyers using Word and/or PowerPoint.
  • Excel financial/invoicing spreadsheets and maintaining tracking sheets for record keeping.
  • Word Mail Merge to send out business letters and invitations.
  • Email etiquette for internal and stakeholders’ communication.

Customer Service Basics

Upon completing this 3-day training, participants will gain comprehensive knowledge of the duties and responsibilities of a customer service representative and/or cashier in the retail industry, and develop skills in engaging with customers and handling their enquiries effectively.

NOTE: The online version of this course currently focuses only on the customer service portion of this course.

Financial Customer Service Basics

Upon completing this 2 day training, participants will gain skills and knowledge necessary to enter the financial services industry. They will understand the role and responsibilities of a financial customer service representative, understand Canadian banking, investment and other financial policies, procedures and compliances, and learn about financial products, tools and terminologies. You will also explore job requirements and employment opportunities.

Microsoft Excel Essentials

Learn essential Microsoft Excel skills to manage spreadsheets effectively. Upon completing this 2-day or 4-day course, you will enjoy intermediate Microsoft Excel skills, and understand how to create worksheets, use formals, format cells, create tables and chart, understand Vlookup and pivot tables, and more.

Essential Skills (Skills for Success)

Learn Essential Skills including reading, document use, numeracy, writing, oral communication, teamwork and more. Upon completing this 4-day course, you will gain the soft skills you need for work, learning and life. Improve your writing, reading and numeracy skills for the workplace.

Advanced Microsoft Excel

Upon completing this 2-day course, you will take your Microsoft Excel knowledge to a new level of mastery. You will learn how to create pivot tables and charts, learn to do conditional formats with built-in rules, create, use, edit and manage macros, and much more. Ideal for users with intermediate Excel knowledge.

Advanced Microsoft Word and PowerPoint

Upon completing this 2-day course, you will learn to be an expert user of both Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. Take your skills to a new level of mastery. In Word, you will learn to use track changes, mail merge, bookmarks and watermarks, and more. In PowerPoint, you will learn how to use transitions, animation and multimedia, among other tools.

Traffic Control Training

Traffic control keeps people safe on the road. Want to launch a career as a traffic control person? Start with this in-class and hands-on course and earn a three-year certification from BC Construction Safety Alliance (BCCSA). Understand the job’s roles and responsibilities, regulations, standards, equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE). Learn how to set up, maintain and remove work zones, and learn how to signal and communicate with construction workers and drivers.

SuperHost Foundations of Service Quality

Learn the principles of providing a quality service experience in the workforce in this one-day SuperHost Foundations of Service Quality training course. This one-day course focuses on workplace communication, problem-solving, customer and employer expectations, and more. Participants will receive a SuperHost Foundations of Service Quality certificate upon passing the final exam.

FOODSAFE Level 1

Want to launch your career in the food service industry? Earn your FOODSAFE Level 1 upon completing this one-day course. Learn food safety and food worker safety information including foodborne illness, receiving and storing food, preparing food, serving food, cleaning and sanitizing.

Participants will be provided a workbook and a FOODSAFE Level 1 certificate upon completion.

Introduction to Sage 50 Accounting Modules

Upon completing this 8-day training, participants will learn how to install Sage 50, set up user roles, company and user settings, and gain knowledge in setting up and processing receivables, payables, general ledgers, banking, budgets and more.  Participants will also receive an official Sage Accounting User Certificate upon passing the certification exam.

Call Centre Basics

Upon completing this 2-day training, participants will understand the basic interaction, responsibilities and expectations of a customer service representative in a call centre environment, develop listening and engaging skills with customers and effectively assisting with their inquiries, and learn the difference between quantity versus quality.

Supervisory Skills Training

Upon completing this 5-day training, participants will be able to conduct basic management skills (decision making, problem solving, planning, delegation and meeting management), learn how to integrate daily activities of planning, organizing and directing to get the work done, build teams by recruiting, training, motivating and coaching staff, and understand employee performance and coaching while setting reasonable expectations (setting goals, observing progress, giving feedback and addressing performance issues).
