Black in BC: Celebrating Black Excellence

This Black History Month, DIVERSEcity Community Resources Society, with support from the Surrey Local Immigration Partnership, is launching the first annual Black in BC event to celebrate Black excellence in Surrey and Metro Vancouver. Sponsored by University Canada West, Global University Systems Canada and TD Bank, the empowering event will connect Black professionals, entrepreneurs, leaders and youth, along with individual and organizational allies to:

  • Celebrate the achievements, cultures and contributions of Black Canadians
  • Recognize and honour Black history in Canada
  • Inspire dialogue, learning and support for Black achievement
  • Advance equity and excellence for Black British Columbians including new immigrants and refugees


  • Keynote speaker Jacky Essombe, Founder, African Friendship Society,
  • Live music and ]dance performance by Indangamirwa Traditional Dance Group
  • Tradeshow featuring exhibition tables from partner organizations and showcase of Black businesses
  • Complimentary African food and pastries
  • DIVERSEtalks panel discussion on “Supporting Black Excellence for an Equitable Future,” moderated by Garrison Duke, COO, DIVERSEcity.

    4–6 pm: Tradeshow and Black business showcase with musical entertainment in atrium
    6–8 pm: Keynote speaker, panel discussion and dance presentation in auditorium
  • Where: Surrey City Hall 13450 104 Avenue, Surrey, BC (near Surrey Central Skytrain)
