English Language Courses for Immigrants

Learn English with free programs in Surrey

DIVERSEcity offers a range of free English language classes to permanent residents and refugees.  From Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) classes up to CLB 6 to pre-literacy programs and support for students with multiple barriers, our amazing instructors will help you learn English, along with tips for your new life in Canada!

Classes are offered at different times of the day and week, and are supported by childminding, with early childhood education curriculum just for your kids!

Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC)

The Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program offers free English language classes to new immigrants. Classes range from pre-literacy to CLB 6.

As part of English language training, clients learn skills for adapting to Canadian society and success in the workplace. They also learn about their new community, services and resources, as well as knowledge of life in Canada including laws, rights and responsibilities.

Due to COVID-19, we are currently offering these classes online via ZOOM:

  • Morning Classes: 9 am – 12 pm, Monday – Thursday
  • Afternoon Classes: 12:30 – 2:30 pm, Monday – Thursday (Foundations Level)
  • Evening Classes: 6:15 – 9 pm, Tuesday – Thursday

Register for free LINC classes

LINC classes are free for adult permanent residents. (Canadian citizens, temporary visitors, temporary foreign workers and refugee claimants who have not yet received a positive decision on their refugee status claim cannot take LINC classes.)

If you have already completed a LINC Assessment, register for classes by calling us at 604-547-1203 or email languageprograms@dcrs.ca.

Get a LINC Assessment from the Surrey Language Assessment Centre

Before you can start classes, you will need a LINC Assessment from the Surrey Language Assessment Centre in Newton. Due to COVID-19, assessments are being done virtually. Here are the steps to take:

  1. Download this LINC Application Form and fill it out. Mail, fax or drop it off at the Surrey Language Assessment Centre, #202 – 7337 137 Street, Surrey, BC, V3W 1A4 Tel: 605-507-4150 Fax: 604-507-4155
  2. The Surrey Language Assessment Centre will contact you to arrange an online or telephone test.
  3.  After you complete your test, your results will be mailed to you. (Note: tests are now valid for two years, so check to see if you have an old assessment that’s still valid.)
  4. Once you receive your results by mail, contact us at the DIVERSEcity LINC program at 604-547-1203 or email languageprograms@dcrs.ca to register for classes.
  5. Need extra support in the assessment process? Unsure about online classes? We can walk you through the assessment process and getting comfortable with online classes.

LINC Assistance and Readiness Class (LARC)

Need additional support while learning English? The LINC Assistance and Readiness Classes (LARC) are a trauma-informed program for clients who need additional support and more flexibility than a conventional LINC class would provide. The goal for clients in the LINC Assistance and Readiness Classes is be able to transition into the regular LINC program.

There are morning and afternoon LARC classes. Due to COVID-19, classes are currently being held online.

Free childminding services for families

DIVERSEcity offers free childminding services for morning LINC and LARC classes (children 18 months to five years).

Children in our childminding services are guided and instructed by a team of licensed early childhood educators whose main focus is to prepare the children for successful entry into kindergarten. If childminding is full, you will be placed on a waitlist and called when a space is available.

Conversation Circles

Conversation Circles are available for LINC students who need additional speaking practice. They are facilitated by a skilled EAL teaching professional and consist of interactive speaking activities that reinforce the LINC curriculum target language.


Community Adult Literacy Program (CALP)

DIVERSEcity’s CALP program will teach you basic English reading and writing skills to help you in:

• Passing tests (IELTS, driver’s licence, Canadian citizenship, FoodSafe)
• Finding a job (resumes, cover letters and job search)
• Volunteering in the community
• Meeting new people and more!

Morning and evening classes are currently being held online via Zoom on:
• Tuesdays & Wednesdays, 5–6 pm
• Fridays, 10 am – 12 pm

Read-y for Life Reading and Writing Skills Program

DIVERSEcity’s Read-y for Life: Pathways for EAL Learners is a bridge literacy program for adult EAL learners who are citizens, temporary foreign workers, permanent residents and refugees lacking proficiency in reading and writing. The classes are PBLA aligned allowing clients to complete reading and writing assessments for Portfolio Based Language Assessment, which are transferable to any Language for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program. Read-y for Life classes are offered in the morning with childminding to accommodate clients who are parents with young children, and in the evening to accommodate clients who are working during the day.

DIVERSEcity offers free childminding services for families in the Read-y for Life program.
