Today is World Refugee Day.
It takes tremendous courage and resilience to restart your life in a completely different country and culture as a refugee. Refugees arrive in Canada through different paths — each shaped by courage, loss and the hope of starting anew. Some are selected abroad by the United Nations High Commissioner on Refugees (UNHCR). Others claim asylum after arriving. No two journeys are the same, but they all begin with one thing: fleeing for safety and a better life.
Many choose Surrey, BC, to begin their new lives, and DIVERSEcity is here to help ease the transition through our various refugee programs, including Safe Haven and RISE.
We created a series of interactive informational boards about the refugee journey and the history of refugees in Canada. These boards help shed light on the complex realities and diverse experiences of refugees.
