Canada is known for its pristine lakes, rivers and coastlines — but open water can be unpredictable, especially if you didn’t grow up around it. Whether you’re camping, fishing or cooling off on a hot day, it’s important to know that 70% of drownings in Canada happen in open water, not pools. That’s why water safety matters more than ever. Here are a few tips from the Lifesaving Society BC & Yukon to help keep you water safe:🏊 Never swim alone. Many drownings happen when someone is by themselves. 🚫 Avoid alcohol near water. 41% of adult drownings involve alcohol. 🛥️ Wear a lifejacket when boating. BC’s wilderness is beautiful — but it’s even better when we look out for one another. If swimming in lakes and rivers is new to you or your family, know that learning is part of the journey. Share what you learn, ask questions and help keep your community safe. #ForPeopleForCommunities #NDPW2025 #SwimSafeBC #NewcomerSafety #DIVERSEcity #SurreyBC #Delta ... See MoreSee Less

What a wonderful weekend we experienced at the Surrey Fusion Festival! 🌞 Under the summer sun with the energy of live music, we had the joy of connecting with so many wonderful people at this vibrant celebration of food, culture and community. A big thank you to the City of Surrey for bringing together such a powerful gathering of diversity and inclusion. Sharing stories and resources, we were honoured to represent DIVERSEcity and meet folks from all walks of life. It’s events like this that remind us that community is our greatest strength. #ForPeopleForCommunities #FusionFestival #ComunityConnections #NewcomerSupport #CulturalDiverscity #DIVERSEcity #SurreyBC #Delta @surreybcevents ... It’s National Drowning Prevention Week, so here at DIVERSEcity we’re teaming up with the Lifesaving Society BC & Yukon Branch to share tips and information to help keep you safe while swimming. Many newcomers to Canada didn’t grow up around lakes or with access to swimming lessons, but here in BC, water is everywhere — from beaches to backyard pools. According to research, 31% of drowning victims were non-swimmers.That’s why swimming is more than a fun summer skill, it’s a life-saving one. Visit your local pool or recreation centre to get familiar with safe swimming environments. You can learn more about: 💧 Culturally inclusive swimming programs 💧 Basic water safety terms 💧 Teaching children how to recognize safe and unsafe water areas Together, we can build water confidence and prevent drownings before they happen. Let’s stay safe together this summer! 🏊 #ForPeopleForCommunities #NDPW2025 #SwimSafeBC #NewcomerSafety #DIVERSEcity #SurreyBC #Delta #SaferTogether ... See MoreSee Less
