It’s National Drowning Prevention Week, so here at DIVERSEcity we’re teaming up with the Lifesaving Society BC & Yukon Branch to share tips and information to help keep you safe while swimming. Many newcomers to Canada didn’t grow up around lakes or with access to swimming lessons, but here in BC, water is everywhere — from beaches to backyard pools. According to research, 31% of drowning victims were non-swimmers.That’s why swimming is more than a fun summer skill, it’s a life-saving one. Visit your local pool or recreation centre to get familiar with safe swimming environments. You can learn more about: 💧 Culturally inclusive swimming programs 💧 Basic water safety terms 💧 Teaching children how to recognize safe and unsafe water areas Together, we can build water confidence and prevent drownings before they happen. Let’s stay safe together this summer! 🏊 #ForPeopleForCommunities #NDPW2025 #SwimSafeBC #NewcomerSafety #DIVERSEcity #SurreyBC #Delta #SaferTogether ... See MoreSee Less

While many of us look forward to sunny weather, rising temperatures can be dangerous, especially for children, older adults, outdoor workers and people living alone or without reliable access to cooling. Dehydration, heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses can escalate quickly if we’re not prepared. That’s why DIVERSEcity has created 10 simple steps to help you Beat the Heat. 🌞 But safety isn’t just about what you do for yourself – it’s about how we can look out for one another. A quick phone call to an elderly neighbour, checking in on a friend with mobility issues, or sharing this graphic with your community can go a long way. Libraries, malls and community centres can serve as great cooling spaces. Fans and A/C are great at home, but even shaded areas and light clothing can make a difference. Whether you’re out running errands, gardening outdoors or relaxing at home … as climate change makes extreme weather more common, these summer safety habits are more important than ever. Stay cool, connected and enjoy the summer safely. 🏖️ Find these tips as a download in English, Spanish and Punjabi here: www.dcrs.ca/resources/environmental-resources/ #ForPeopleForCommunites #BeattheHeat #SummerSafety #CommunityCare #ClimatePreparedness #DIVERSEcity #SurreyBC #Delta ...
