“I want to set an example that will never be forgotten.” Those are the words of local hero Terry Fox. From Port Coquitlam, BC, Terry was only 18 when he lost his leg to osteogenic sarcoma. He dipped his artificial leg in the Atlantic Ocean on April 12, 1980, and proceeded to unite Canadians in a way that had never been done before as he began his Marathon of Hope, to raise money for cancer research, according to the Terry Fox Foundation. Sadly, cancer returned and he was forced to stop his cross-country run on September 1, 1980, after running 5,373 kilometres. Terry Fox passed away on June 28, 1981, at 22 years old. Today his legacy remains, and an annual Terry Fox Run is held each September in communities across Canada. Happening tomorrow, September 15, 2024, the 44th annual Terry Fox Run is happening all over the Lower Mainland. We wanted to share awareness of Terry’s story and the annaul run, which has become a fall tradition in Canada, uniting more than 650 communities — big and small, urban and rural, English and French — in fundraising efforts for cancer research. Thank you to The Terry Fox Foundation for providing us with this information including the graphic used here. Do you want to find out more about Terry Fox and the Terry Fox Runs happening tomorrow?
