Jordan and Tsighe from our IMPACT Parenting Program accompanied a group of families on a field trip to the National Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration in #SurreyBC this Saturday. This cohort of IMPACT was for Eritrean families who speak Tigrinya. IMPACT offers a learner-centered, strengths-based approach to parenting support for children 0-6, covering topics such as behaviour, child safety, routines and discipline. "As a person of Indigenous background, I was able to provide first-hand information for families with questions about Indigenous cultures, and Tsighe was able to translate for families in their native Tigrinya," says Jordan. An inspiring example of bridging newcomer and Indigenous cultures! Thanks to our IMPACT team for sharing this important event with their clients! June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada, a day to honour the history, culture, contributions and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis people. At DIVERSEcity, reconciliation is an important priority for us as we serve the community, working with Indigenous partners for knowledge sharing and relationship-building. This year, we were proud to unveil a visually stunning and thought-provoking mural at DIVERSEcity’s Surrey Community Campus by xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) artists Chase Gray and Nova Wolf, which sends a message of harmony among people, animals and the land. Our staff and clients have been inspired by this piece of public art ever since the unveiling. (Photo shows our Seniors Services team with the mural during a recent seniors celebration!).Today, as we move forward in our goals of reconciliation, we are pleased to announce the introduction of new programming welcoming Indigenous Elders to DIVERSEcity. Our Active Elders program creates a community space for Indigenous elders to come together for connection, culture and wellness. We are also introducing a cross-cultural program, Elders and Seniors Storytelling Circle, bringing Indigenous Elders and diverse seniors from various backgrounds including Punjabi, together for crafts, art and lunch.Today, we will be sharing more about these programs and paying respect to local Indigenous communities at Surrey's National Indigenous Peoples Day celebration in Cloverdale, hosted by sǝmyámǝ (Semiahmoo), q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie) and q̓ʷɑ:n̓ƛ̓ən̓ (Kwantlen) First Nations. Come by and say hi!Learn more and register for our new programs here: www.dcrs.ca/our-services/services-for-seniors/ Watch a video about the mural in the artists' own words here: www.dcrs.ca/about-us/truth-and-reconciliation/ #NIPD2025 #NationalIndigenousPeoplesDay #elders #Indigenous #ForPeopleForCommunities #diversity ... Refugees arrive in Canada through different paths — each shaped by courage, loss and the hope of starting anew. Some are selected abroad by the United Nations High Commissioner on Refugees (UNHCR). Others claim asylum after arriving. No two journeys are the same, but they all begin with one thing: fleeing for safety and a better life.We created a series of interactive informational boards about the refugee journey and the history of refugees in Canada. Come learn and celebrate #WorldRefugeeDay today, June 20 at #fleetwood Community Centre from 4:30–6:30 pm.Read the full article here: www.dcrs.ca/explore-the-refugee-journey-during-world-refugee-day/#ForPeopleForCommunities #WorldRefugeeDay #refugees #community #familyevent #fleetwood #langley ...
