Literacy & Essential Skills Program (Moving Ahead courses)

The Moving Ahead program offers Life Skills, Literacy, and Essential Skills courses for adult students at literacy or pre-literacy level.

The Moving Ahead Literacy class, Learning Ahead, provides a learner-centred approach to program delivery and instruction. The Literacy instructor providea individual instruction during class time and meet monthly with learners for a review of their plans and progress, as they begin the supported process of self-assessment, self-management, and self-direction. The class is offered in the morning for two hours each day, Monday to Friday.

Essential Skills workshops are offered throughout the year and clients can be referred to these by case workers. The workshops are supported by case workers or language assistance volunteers. The afternoon workshops are two to three hours in duration and include topics such as

  • Tenant and Landlord rights and  responsibilities
  • Employee rights and responsibilities
  • Dental care and hygiene
  • Pedestrian and bicycle safety
  • Transit

Other workshops are developed and delivered to meet the emerging needs of the community.
