LGBTQ Newcomer Program

LGBTQ Newcomer Program

DIVERSEcity Community Resources Society Safe Space Pilot program is a partnership with Rainbow Refugee that offers Peer Support Groups for LGBTQ Newcomers every second and fourth Sunday from May- October, 2018 at the DIVERSEcity Community Campus, 5-7pm. It is open to all newcomers of any status 18 years and older.

Often faced with being a ‘minority within a minority’, LGBTQ Newcomers experience complexities navigating the settlement process. In response to the lack of supports for this population within the local community, DIVERSEcity Community Resources Society will be launching the pilot program for sexual and gender diverse newcomers. The program will be client centered and offer a safe and welcoming space for LGBTQI+ immigrants and refugees to meet new people, learn about resources and information, share experiences and be part of an inclusive community.

The program will set a precedence in settlement services offered to develop a truly holistic and inclusive community here in the Fraser Valley. The groups aim to support the unique needs of LGBTQ newcomers as they face barriers ranging from racism, homophobia, transphobia and isolation, to finding resources and support services pertaining to needs such as safe housing and employment.
