The primary objective of the camp is to offer group counselling in a safe, supportive environment. Many of the children have experienced migration-related trauma or acculturation stress, have experienced or witnessed abuse, or have a mental health diagnosis. The participants can share their experiences, identify and talk about their feelings, improve their self-esteem, enhance communication and conflict resolution skills, and realize that they are not alone. The CYEC is facilitated by counsellors from the following programs: Stopping the Violence, Children Who Witness Abuse, Child & Youth Mental Health, Substance Use Counselling, and Family Counselling.
The Delta and Surrey Police and Fire Departments have partnered with DIVERSEcity and they help educate the participants to enhance their understanding about the impact of abuse, street violence, and bullying at schools. The camps are free and space is limited.
